Beard, 22, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Casey, Korea; killed Oct. 14 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle as he was doing reconnaissance for explosives at Camp Ramadi, Iraq.

  • Army Staff Sgt. Omer T. Hawkins II, 31, of Cherry Fork, Ohio; assigned to the 44th Engineer Battalion, Camp Howze, Korea; killed Oct. 14 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his convoy in Ramadi, Iraq. Also killed was Pfc. Mark A. Barbret.

  • Army Pvt. David L. Waters, 19, of Auburn, Calif.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y.; killed Oct. 14 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his convoy vehicle in Baghdad.

  • Army Spc. Josiah H. Vandertulip, 21, of Irving, Texas; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; killed Oct. 14 when his dismounted patrol came under enemy fire in Baghdad.

  • Army Spc. Kyle Ka Eo Fernandez, 26, of Waipahu, Hawaii; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division (Light), Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; killed Oct. 14th when an improvised explosive device detonated near his dismounted patrol in Miam Do, Afghanistan. Also killed was Staff Sgt. Brian S. Hobbs.

Also killed was Capt. Christopher B. Johnson.

Bascom was a mobilized member of the Individual Ready Reserves.
